Twisted Mirrors Volume 2 Cover by dragonsong12 Twisted Mirrors Volume 2 Cover by dragonsong12
I've been struggling with this cover for months now...mostly in brainstorming, I couldn't come up with an idea that matched what I wanted.

See, I still love the cover of Volume 1 (don't bother looking in my gallery, I never posted it). Sure, it's not technically that well done, but I love the image, it's simple, it's striking, and it conveys a lot. So a large part of the problem in designing this image was in trying to top that image. There's a lot that happens in volume 2, and I wanted to represent that, but whenever I considered making a more typical comic cover with lots of characters and action and maybe some big heads floating in the background, I thought back to volume 1's cover and realized what I really needed was something like that, something more simple...but I couldn't exactly just repeat it, could I?
Add that to the fact that I wanted to make sure that I included Jaith and Tai - since Volume 2 makes them into main characters rather than the side characters they started out as - and you can see my problem.

So this...was the best I could do.
I'm not entirely pleased with it, I don't think it's nearly as strong as the cover to volume 1, but I can't think of anything better, so this is what we're going with.

If the colors look a little wonky, that's because it's a CMYK file, made for print, and doesn't convert well into RGB for online posting. I might mess with the colors a bit before it goes to print anyway - since that won't be for a while - likely to make the carvings pop a little better, but I wanted to get this posted today to coincide with the chapter cover being posted, so I rushed it a bit.

Volume 2! Coming...whenever I get the time. :D

Late comment, but I just really wanted to say something on this picture!
Mostly, I just really love seeing these three together, or in color, and especially both at the same time! I think it's a good concept, though it is visually heavy at the bottom compared to the top. Maybe if Tai-ra were a bit bigger and took up a little more of that blank space, or if more of Jaith was showing it could even out. Jaith, Tren and the wall look really good, but Tai and the background colors seem very removed from everything in comparison.
The wall looks really good, love the carvings :D and the interaction between Jaith and Tren. Poor Tren, he always looks so unsure..
I don't know, since you're saying you do have some time to rework it maybe this can help, but I think it is good as it stands. Just, there's always room for improvement I guess, haha

Well, part of the reason I left the top as blank as I did was for the title, so some of that space will be taken up in the final version. Though I do agree that Tai's could use some work...I actually redrew her several times because I had a hard time fitting her into this for some reason.
This cover has fought me every step of the way, so I'm actually kind of pleased it came out as good as it did. Mostly I just like the carvings, so I'm glad people are liking them as well. :D Thanks!

Aaah, well if there's gonna be a title there then that makes sense :P
I know how it is drawing a picture that just doesn't want to be drawn. My latest upload did just that haha
Hm, I don't know if you would want to redraw any parts of this, but yeah I think it's just fine!
And yes, the carvings :D I really love that. And if you're gonna do any more work on them, ah that'll be awesome to see!
ha You're welcome :D

Oh, nice! I like how you hid scenes from the chapter in the carvings; that's cool! (besides, I'm just a sucker for old, slightly damaged architecture anyway) Very nice.

Me too, my friend, me too. :D

But it was really the only way I could think of to keep it "simple" and still show some of the other details from throughout the story. That much, I'm actually still pretty pleased with. :D

Yaaay, I like this cover! Assuming that is still Nareth in there and they know who he is now, it shows they are friendly towards him still, which is encouraging. I like that they will be main characters now. ^^ THanks for posting this on DA, I can't comment on DrunkDuck. I love their expressions, esp. Tren/Nareth's.

Thanks! I'm glad you like it! I still have some issues with it myself, but I think it'll work, and there definitely some bits about it I really like. :D

Thanks! There was just so much that happened in those chapters, I felt like I needed to find a way to represent them as well. That wall is actually the part of this I'm most pleased with, it came out kinda good, but it's also subtle not all "LOOK AT ME! I'M A REFERENCE!" :XD:

I can see your dilema. The cover for Volume 1 said a whole lot about the premise of the story and showed Tren-an's/Nareth's feelings about the transformation. It's also a fitting image because TM isn't a tale about action and fighting.

I'm not sure if I can suggest much, What chapters does volume 2 contain?

Volume 2 will cover Chapter 7 (in which they depart on their journey) to present (or, through Chapter 14, arriving at the city of free boetheri and elves).

Mainly, I was really concerned about getting Jaith and Tai in the picture while still maintaning some of that feeling of "reflection" that the first cover had, but there's so much going on in those chapters that it can hard to represent everything simply...

...the funny thing is, I know exactly what I want the cover of the final (4th) volume to look like, but no clue on the next one (3rd) either. :XD:

Final covers are probably easier because that's where you wrap it all up, at least that's what I think, I've never gotten past 10 chapters in my stories before I rewrite them ^^;

I think you're in the right direction with the ruins, Jaith and Tai. I don't think TM needs any giant floating heads or dynamic poses like an anime poster. The only things I could think of suggesting, would be maybe redrawing the cover to have them walking, or examining the ruins, that or taking the current one and adding more of a solid background to it, because I do feel like Volume 2 has a lot of focus on the travel to the ruins and the growing friendship between Tren and the others. Maybe then add a pair of eyes looking at them from the darkness?

See, now I'm going to give you a challenge. On your next project - no matter how much your earlier stuff bothers you, no matter how much better you think you can make it, no matter how much you've advanced since then, you are not allowed to go back to fix things until it's done!
Doing otherwise just gets you stuck in an endless loop of fixing things. WE MUST CHARGE AHEAD! :salute:
...yeah...I'm feeling silly again. ^^;

Hm...I'll have to thing about it. I've got a while anyway, I only have about half of the pages ready to print, and I'll still need a spine, back cover, and pre-and-post pages. So there's a lot mroe work to do before this sees the light of day regardless. ^^; (Also, I need to stop being lazy and JUST DO IT! :XD:)

I ACCEPT YOUR CHALLENGE. Mainly because I'm working through a children's book right now and I have no choice but to get X amount done for each class of I I go to.

Here's a question for you. Where do you work on your comics? In the living room? Bedroom? Any certain time or conditions you do it by? I ask because I have a large room divided into 2 areas, one for sleep, one for "work". I have only one table and it has my laptop right there, so to work I'm always just a reach away from taking a "quick" break to "check some messages" and inevitably work gets abandoned for DA ^^;. No where in the house has a proper area to work that isn't super busy. Sometimes I can work on a TV dinner table in the tv room and watch Documentaries as I work but often my work load is too large for a tv dinner table (curse you homework!)

I would accuse you of cheating, but that's actually a good idea. GO! WORK! ACCOMPLISH! :evillaugh:

Well, you can tell from my videos that I mainly work on a notebook on my lap with all my stuff scattered around me. ^^; That unfortunate habit was probably created because I never had a desk, and I stubbornly refused to work at the kitchen table. So I just got used to working that way, to the point where I don't like working at desks or tables anymore.
As for where, well, my own habits make anywhere a possibility - and I often do take my comics on the go, though I mainly work on the living room couch, usually while watching something mindless, like a movie I've seen before, or an episode of MST3K.
...of course, my crap has taken over said couch and I feel bad about it, but the habit's so ingrained I can't fix it at this point.
...but that's why I reply to these in blocks. Generally, I'm on DA at work, in between doing other things, because when I'm at home, I'm in a different room from the computer, and I don't get on it much. That's also why I'm absent on weekends. ^^;

I think I'd have a lot of trouble in your situation too though (Sounds like my sister's old apartment...why are all my replies to you today mentioning her? haha!) with the limited space you CAN'T get far from the computer. ^^; I remember trying to work from TV Trays myself, those things have no space! I want to complain, but that's kinda the point, I guess. :XD: I'd just end up bringing all my stuff and surrounding myself with it, like a little homework fort, but I'm a terrible role model, because that creates a lot of messes. ^^;

:lmao: Actually I think it is cheating because I didn't write the story, I only edited it. That said I'd be proud if I got this story finished, whether it's published or not. I'd love to be doing a webcomic right now, but I don't have the time or the energy. After days of drawing letters, designs and the shit you have to draw in firs level drawing classes, I have no patience to do more problem solving or story planning for the rest of the week so I just crash and game or do some other form of art (lately flower origami that I'm making into a bouquet for easter).

Sounds like a flexible way of working though, no wonder you can keep a weekly update going strong, I'm pretty sure many webcomic artists have had to stop because of a lack of specialty pens, or buying a new table or something like that.

My back hurts at most tables and chairs in my house. Option 1 is said computer table and chair, thing is, I have the dumbest computer desk in history, it's 3 feet high, and I'm only 5 feet, so my chair has to be so high that my feet don't touch the ground, so I tuck them up, which hurts after a bit, also I have a super-cushy chair made for leaning back and slowly turning around and leering down employees as I stroke my cat and tap my fingers over the trapdoor button to the alligator pit :XD:. Option 2 is a big comfy red chair I got from my grandparents, more made for tv watching, and the worst plastic TV table EVER. Option 3 is the "dinner table" never used for dinner, and the crappy chairs that are breaking and have bad backings. Option 4 is the bar in the kitchen with worse chairs, and no room to work. Option 5 is sitting at the edge of the futon, or the edge of these deep square chairs and working on the TV table. Option 6 is to somehow draw while reclined in an indoor/outdoor recliner in my lap.... usually my homework is just on 9x12 paper, but then you need the notes, instructions, and examples, and then your multitude of tools ^^;. I'd probably build a fort like you do but I own 3 dogs, and they love to jump up on the futon, so I have to have my work out of the way or use the "my 90 pound dog jumped and sat on my homework" :lmao:

What I need is a freakin' TARDIS. :rofl:

Aw, that sucks! I can see your predicament!
"What I need is a freakin' TARDIS"
I know, right? The Doctor is holding out on us!
It's weird that you mentioned about the dog, though. Since I have a habit of spreading my work all around me, I almost always have pages sitting next to me when I work. My cat must always sit on them. ALWAYS. There is no where else on the entire couch she can sit, no it MUST be the papers. :XD: Animals are so awesome (and I mean that. They HAVE to be since they do things to drive us mad, they have to make us love them! :D)

I can't think of anyway to rectify it though. You need a chair in the middle ground! One that's comfortable, but not TOO comfortable. :XD:

Admittedly, I also have myself on a pretty strict schedule to make sure things get done on time. A schedule which aims to have the pages mostly finished before the weekend, so that if I can't get it done on time, I have the weekend to make it up (and if I DO have it done on time, then the weekend is free! Whoo!). For example, I get up early and do most of the coloring for FFC before work - Monday is scanning and resizing, Tuesday is shading, Wednesday is coloring the characters, Thursday is coloring the backgrounds, and Friday is hilighting. Anything I don't get done in the morning, I make myself do at night before bed just to keep myself from getting behind.
It's something I don't miss at all about school. Homework. When I go home, I forget work and do my own thing. :XD:
