Reflections by dragonsong12 Reflections by dragonsong12
This didn't come out as well as I'd hoped, but it's been so long since I've done something JUST in pencil that I thought I'd give it a shot. (Wow, it really shows how long it's been...damn...I'd better get back into that I guess... :()

Anyway, I've been wanting to do something to these lyrics for a while, because I really like them, and this seemed like as good an excuse as any. It's sorta supposed to be Tren's reflections on things he's learned in life...

The lyrics are (c) Barenaked Ladies' "Falling for the First Time" (I loves these guys, can you tell? Crazy Canadians. :XD:)

haha! Yeah, I'm a bit obsessive about my story and characters. I think of them pretty much constantly. ^^; But I think you know what that's like.

As for a picture, well, I like drawing stuff, so it depends what you have in mind, really, and if you're willing to wait. :D I'm pretty slow about getting stuff done, which you can see by noting the dates of my deviations here, heh. And at the moment, I'm trying to get a Christmas present finished for some friends, so it would end up taking a back seat to that. But yeah, as long as it's PG, I'd be willing to take a crack at it. I love a challenge. :D
What did you have in mind?

<SQUEEE!> ok, I promise to stop doing that...
Well, there's no rush of course, but I'd love to see your depiction of my Jack Derenger! It'd be awesome to show him in all his Boetheri glory when I post the part of the story where he reveals himself! lol

I NEVER turn down fanart! :D I like seeing how other people interpret the characters. (That's part of the fun of art, everyone sees it differently!) So any kind of fanart you wanted to do would be awesome!

I really like this one. The cracks in the wall look great, and Tren's furriness and limbs are just cool looking. Sweet lyrics too . . . .

Thanks so much! It's really just been too long since I've worked with pencil, I feel like I can do so much mroe detail than I can with pen. I should do these more often...

I love that song so much. It was fun to get to use it. :D

I think this looks really great, I would think that you've been using pencil continuously from seeing this. The highlights and shadows are very subdued and gentle and that really brings out the hope in despair feeling of the whole piece. And the background looks excellent. The bottom of the wall by his tail pretty much owns. I don't know how else to say it. And the way it fades behind the words looks very good.

I guess it bothers me because I know it could've looked much better if I'd spent a bit more time on it, there's an awful lot of white in the background, and I think I overworked his hair a bit...

But I'm really glad people like it anyway, I wasn't sure I wanted to post it, now I'm glad I did. :D I need to get back into doing pencils, I think I got away from it because I kept discovering new ways to digitally color and wanted to experiment, but one should never forget one's roots! :D

Hmm, I can start to see the flaws in it when you point them out.. but they don't subtract from the piece in any noticeable way. The background does seem a little blank since you mention it, but that emptiness helped to bring him into focus, as well as keep the eye on him and not bouncing around the page. There are some nice extra things to look at, but ultimately one's eye is drawn back to Tren. But I don't know if that's what you were going for, but for what it is, it works. And there's always the option of going back to this piece. That, however, is something I tend to find really hard to do.

Hm...you're right, I hadn't really looked at it that way. Perhaps it isn't as bad as I initially thought.

...I probably wouldn't go back into it, as you say, I have a hard time with that too ^^; Once I tell myself it's "finished" my mind starts to move on.

Aw wow, this looks so great! You did an awesome job drawing Tren, and the background. ^^ I love how he looks! And those lyrics fit Tren so well. (Well, except that I'm not sure he was really in love w/ his lady friend, but that's a debatable point. :) ) Really nice job, dragonsong! I, as a dedicated pencil artist, salute your tecnique! =D

I think I pressed a bit hard on his hair, and that's the part that really bothers me (plus I got like WAY lazy on the backgrounds, there should be more shading than that) the technique I was attempting to use combines many lines of the same weight to create dark areas, because that gives the picture a much smoother feel than simply pressing hard but...I'll admit it, I got lazy ^^;

I don't tend to view Tren's relationship with Ralla as actual love, but he does. He's never really been in love before, and just kind of assumes that he knows what it is. Poor dumb Tren. :XD:

Actually, I was thinking that his hair looks amazing! I'm trying to figure out how you did your technique to make it look so much like...well, HAIR. I am not so great with hair. All the wavy and the lines and the locks and...arg. This is why all my characters either have razor-straight hair (like mine) or pointy outlined anime hair. ^^;

That makes sense, then. XD Awww!

Aww! :hug: Thanks! That really made me smile!

Hm...hair's pretty tricky, because it doesn't really have "shape" like most things (arms and legs and whatnot), but try to draw with no shape, and it just becomes a mess!

You're welcome! :hug:

Yes, and what shape it does have is directly connected w/ the shape of the head. So you have to have an acute knowledge of how it flows off the head and stuff...and I'm not there yet. ^^;

Someone needs a hug.
Love the way you did the cracks that looks really cool, and your pencil art is really well shaded, better than the rnadomness I did out of the bottom of my workbag every day hehe. You should ink this...or maybe let me have a go at it, I have really been enjoying doing a few crossovers as of late :D
I still want to glomp him hehe.

I'd really like to do a swap with you! I'm not sure this picture's the one to do it on, in my head it's finished, but I think it'd be kinda neat to see what each of us did with the other's pencils!
And yeah, I've been drawing too many ruins lately for TM, so it's kinda stuck in my hands to add cracks to things now. At least I've learnes how to! :D
